An Ohio Karen is tired of her name being the center of memes about entitled, rude women. That’s why she’s seeking a legal name change so she can put the name and its pop-culture notoriety behind her for good.
The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that 50-year-old Karen Firestone is fed up with feeling like the butt of Karen jokes, so she’s changing her name. The woman intends on changing her name to Kat, which she believes couldn’t possibly suffer the same fate as the name Karen.
The use of names as insulting slang isn’t anything new. Just a handful of years ago the name Becky was synonymous with a certain type of young woman. The name Stacy has also had its time in the spotlight, as has Debbie and Deborah. The name Karen will someday fall out of style as a term of non-endearment. Hopefully the name Kat doesn’t replace it.
