When Sherri Papini went missing in 2016, her case attracted national attention while authorities in Northern California spent time and resources looking for her. She had reportedly been kidnapped, and numerous people were worried that she’d been murdered. Come to find out, the kidnapping was all a lie — and the California woman had never been missing at all. Now, after several years, the woman who faked her own kidnapping is being made to face justice.

According to Fox 5 News, Sherri Papini has admitted to faking her 2016 abduction. This comes just about a month after she was arrested and formally accused of concocting the kidnapping by federal agents. That’s not all, she was also charged with defrauding a fund that was allocated for victims of crime in the state of California. So not only did she lie about her kidnapping, Papini also allegedly collected money as a crime victim — even though she wasn’t a victim of any crime at all.

The attorney of the California woman says that she signed a plea agreement, and that admitting to falsifying the kidnapping was part of the deal. However, the exact details of this plea agreement aren’t publicly known at this time. Is it possible that Sherri Papini signed a deal to avoid facing justice for taking money from California crime victims?
