An Alabama man has been convicted of an unthinkable act of matricide in a case that began in 2017. The details of this case are absolutely shocking, but it’s far from the only one of its kind — including in the deep south.

Clarke Raines was convicted of killing his own mother today in an Alabama courtroom. NBC 2 News reports that Raines was also found guilty of over a dozen counts of fraudulent use of a credit card as well. The credit card usage stems from the time that his mother was missing — over a year — while he carried on with her finances.

Prosecutors in Alabama proved that Clarke Raines hogtied his mother before murdering her and disposing of her body. According to the facts of this case, 68-year-old Kay Raines was reported missing in January 2017. Her body was found in Baldwin county a year later.

This isn’t the first time someone has killed their parents in the Yellowhammer state. A handful of year ago, a 17-year-old boy named Jesse Holton reportedly shot his parents to death over a dispute related to a party. Earlier this year an Alabama man allegedly killed his mother with a ninja sword before attacking his uncle.
