The JonBenét Ramsey cold case is back in media headlines with new developments — but will we ever have answers behind who killed the little girl? This case has spanned across multiple decades, and speculation has involved everyone from the slain child’s parents, to her older brother, to a number of potential killers. But her case has remained unsolved all this time.

According to multiple sources, police in Colorado have announced a new investigation into the murder of JonBenét Ramsey. This announcement comes just a month ahead of the 26th anniversary of the child’s murder, which reportedly took place on Christmas Day of 1996. Boulder authorities are launching a new investigation into the homicide as part of a 2023 plan to bring closure to the case.

Even though there have been no solid leads in this 26-year-old cold case, police believe a small amount of DNA will play a role in possibly solving it. According to investigators, a small amount of DNA was obtained from the crime scene 26-years-ago, but the sample is so small that it could potentially be destroyed (or consumed) during testing. Apparently science has caught up with detectives, because testing this small sample might now be possible.

If this DNA sample is successfully tested, what could the future hold for this cold case? The unsolved murder of JonBenét Ramsey is such an iconic part of true crime history that it has leaked over into pop culture numerous times over the past 26 years. Her heavily made up face can be seen tattooed on the likes of Jeffree Star, and celebrities like Ariana Grande have been called out for making jokes about the iconic murder case. The fact that this six-year-old child’s murder has gone unsolved for so long has sort of mystified the victim in a way that has embedded her as an American legend. Will that change if her case ends up solved in the near (or distant) future? Or will JonBenét’s murder remain as enigmatic as that of the Black Dahlia’s?
