A Tennessee man is in jail after police say he used an Apple Watch to track his former girlfriend, who had previously accused him of domestic violence. The details of this story are shocking, and should serve as a reminder for victims of stalking and domestic violence to be hyper diligent in making sure their security isn’t under threat.

Fox 5 News reports that Laurence Welch was arrested and charged in association with attaching a tracking device to his ex girlfriend’s car while it was parked at a domestic violence resource center. The incident took place on Friday and was reportedly seen by witnesses, who say they saw Welch approach the woman’s car before crouching down. At the time of the incident, the victim was inside the facility to seek a safe place away from the man. When police arrived at the scene, an Apple Watch was found attached to the spoke part of one of the woman’s vehicle’s tires. The woman, who isn’t being identified for her safety, told police that the watch belonged to Welch.

Like every other Apple product, the Apple Watch can be tracked through the “Find My” feature, but there are also a multitude of apps that can be installed to these devices for tracking purposes. These features and apps are incredibly useful for when it comes to misplacing your items or keeping track of your children — but there are clearly darker uses for these apps as well. As this story illustrates, the Apple Watch can very easily be used as a tracking device — although an incredibly expensive one.
