A Mississippi mom has been arrested after police — and numerous witnesses — say she bashed her own baby to death on a road in broad daylight. This is an absolutely horrifying case that has many people wondering about the motive. Was this a case of a new mother having a mental break, or were other motives at play?

True Crime Daily reports that police were called by several horrified witnesses who claimed that a woman was slamming an infant onto the street in the town of Pearl, Mississippi. When police arrived at the scene, they reportedly observed 20-year-old Makaylia Shaylynn Jolley had fled the scene on foot into the nearby woods and paramedics were treating the eight-week-old infant, who was critically injured.

Witnesses told authorities that the 20-year-old Mississippi mom “repeatedly and forcibly” threw the infant on the road. When witnesses interfered and called 911, she fled, leaving her mother and her injured infant at the scene. Fortunately, police were able to chase her out of the wooded area and she was arrested.

At the time of her arrest, Makaylia Jolley was charged with attempted murder and felony child abuse. However, once the infant was transported to a nearby hospital, it was declared deceased. The Mississippi mom’s charges have now been upgraded to capital murder. This week she made her first court appearance, where she was denied bond — meaning she will stay in jail until she goes to trial, where she will hopefully be convicted and get the death penalty.

As for a motive in this horrifying incident: Reports aren’t sharing any. Authorities may not even know the motive at this time, but if they do, they’re not sharing it.
