A Florida man is making headlines this week — as Florida men are known to do — in a situation that appears to be a case of life imitating art. Now, while one man is charged with drug possession, police departments all over the country are probably getting a bit of a giggle at the fact that a long-running joke has finally made a return.

Police in Florida say Thomas Eugene Colucci called 911 and requested police assistance because he believed he’d purchased fake crystal meth from someone at a bar. They probably thought it was a prank call at first, but still went to the residence of the Florida man, where they were shown two baggies of the illegal drug.

This news report says that Colucci bragged to authorities that he was “an experienced drug user” and that he knew what real meth looked and felt like — so he was suspicious of the baggies he’d bought at the bar. He also provided the name and details of the person who sold him the substance.

Doing as they were asked, authorities did a quick field test on the baggies and were able to confirm that the Florida man did indeed purchase crystal meth. To his surprise, he was arrested on the spot.

This hilariously stupid incident appears to stem from the frequent joke made by police departments on social media, offering to test the authenticity of street drugs that you might have in your possession. Police departments often specifically offer to test meth, but most people realize that this is a satirical joke that kind of plays on the idea that criminals are so stupid that they’d be willing to accidentally turn themselves in to authorities if given the chance. It turns out in the case of this Florida man, the old joke rings true.
