An Arizona woman has been arrested and slapped with several charges after she allegedly stabbed her own mother several times. The details of this crime are shocking, and at this time the victim of the violent attack is in critical condition.

AZ Central reports that the incident took place on Wednesday morning while the victim was driving to work. Police docs state that 27-year-old Brenda Villela was a passenger in the car, but the events leading up to the attack aren’t clear. Phoenix police say Villela savagely attacked her mother — who is not being named in media reports — stabbing her numerous times while she was trying to drive. The attack caused the woman to crash her car. After the stabbing, Villela reportedly took off on foot and left her mother for dead.

This news report alleges that the attack may have stemmed from a custody dispute regarding Brenda Villela’s children, but this hasn’t been confirmed. The report also states that Brenda was in the backseat of the car at the time, indicating that the attack was a total ambush. Loved ones have spoken out claiming that the Arizona woman suffers from mental illness, which has something to do with her mother getting custody of her kids.

Fortunately, the unnamed older woman wasn’t killed in the attack, but she is currently in critical condition in the hospital. Brenda Villela was arrested on Friday after eluding capture for a handful of days. It toko police requesting help from the public before she was caught. The Arizona woman has been charged with attempted homicide and a laundry list of other assorted charges with the near-fatal attack on her own mother.
