Ohio Mom Shaved Daughter's Head in Fake Cancer Scam

An Ohio mom has been arrested on accusations that she faked her daughter’s cancer as a means to scam people of thousands of dollars. Forty-one-year-old Pamela Reed has been charged with Theft by Deception in association with the scheme, which involved shaving her seven-year-old daughter’s head to make it look like she was a cancer patient.

The New York Post reports that Pamela Reed fabricated stories about her daughter’s health over a span of several years, and even documented her fictional struggles on social media for attention and clout. Members of Reed’s own community weren’t even spared from the scam. Police say that people raised and donated money to the Ohio mom and her family to help pay for living expenses and cancer treatments for the seven-year-old girl. Among claims of cancer and other conditions, Reed had also told numerous people that her child was blind in one eye. This particular lie is what led to the downfall of the entire cancer scheme.

A nurse at the child’s school recently discovered that the little girl wasn’t in fact blind in one of her eyes as the Ohio mom had claimed. This is what triggered the nurse to contact the child’s physician to inquire about other claims that had been made by Reed. Come to find out, the child was not blind, did not suffer from any form of cancer, and was an otherwise healthy child. Upon further investigation, it was found that the Ohio mom had falsified documents and given them to the school to further her false claims that her child was ill.

Pamela Reed was arrested on Monday after the investigation led authorities down a rabbit hole of incriminating evidence — much of which posted directly by the Ohio mom on social media. She had an entire page dedicated to her so-called struggles as the mother of a child with cancer. This page contained numerous posts masquerading her child’s made-up illnesses while begging for money. It was determined that several well-meaning strangers, as well as members of the woman’s own community, donated thousands of dollars. All of this money went directly into the hands of Pamela Reed, and was not used for any child’s cancer treatments.

Pamela Reed admitted to police that the entire thing was a scam. She even admitting to shaving her seven-year-old daughter’s head to make it look like she’d gone through chemotherapy. On Monday, at the time of her arrest, the Ohio mom’s children were removed from her custody. At this time, reports aren’t sharing any details regarding whether or not Reed’s husband had any involvement in the scheme. Hopefully more information comes out to answer some of the questions coming from the public.

This arrest comes just on the heels of the release of Gypsy Rose Blanchard, who had served a handful of years in prison over her involvement with the death of her mother. Like the child in this latest story, Gypsy was forced to pretend that she was sick while her mother ran a scam for attention and money.
