April Fool’s Day comes around every year, and is supposed to be a day of jovial pranks and harmless shenanigans. However, some All Fools Day pranks can go too far, and some people aren’t interested in celebrating at all — like some of the horrible examples in the following article.
April Fools Shooting Spree of 1998
On April Fools Day, 1998, two men went on a murder spree that spanned across two states — which left five people dead and another one clinging miraculously to life. Nineteen-year-old Chalk Wessell and another man named Steve A. Hale went on the murderous rampage, shooting multiple people after a so-called business deal fell-through. Multiple sources covered the crime when it took place, but few could put into words any understanding of why the shooting spree happened. A later article, about a decade after the crime spree, revealed that the shooters were high on crystal meth.
The Accidental Suicide of Lance Bassett
On April 1st, 2011, the body of 15-year-old Lance Bassett was found hanging in his bedroom — dead from an apparent suicide. His loved ones believe that the boy had set up an elaborate prank the night before, in hopes of giving his parents a scare on the morning of April Fools Day. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out that way, and Lance Bassett died. It should be noted that while his loved ones believe that his death was the result of an April Fool’s prank gone wrong, it’s never been proven.
Your Prank Shouldn’t Waste Police Resources
In 2021 a Wichita, Kansas woman thought it’d be a fun April Fools Day prank to pretend she’d been shot. Police say 58-year-old Arnthia Willis called her daughter and said she’d been shot, but then she hung up before she could say anything else. Obviously, her daughter was worried, so she called 911, and police went to the home of the woman who claimed to be injured. They found an empty house waiting for them, which led them on the hunt for Arnthia. Come to find out, the Wichita woman was actually at work, and the whole thing was just a big prank. Police didn’t find this funny, so they arrested Arnthia and charged her with unlawful request of emergency services.
The Murder of Marvin Gaye
Marvin Gaye was a legendary soul singer that captivated millions with his voice and his charm. However, behind closed doors, he had a troubled family. That trouble came to a head on April Fools Day, 1984, when Marvin’s own father shot him dead after he tried to intervene in an altercation between the older man and his mother. Even though the murder of Marvin Gaye wasn’t necessarily related to an April Fools Day prank, many people believed that his death wasn’t real due to it being on the notoriously prank-filled holiday. In fact, Smokey Robinson famously quoted that he thought the entire thing was a joke — until he learned otherwise.
