Today is Red Shawl Day, which is a day we dedicate to honoring missing and murdered indigenous people — especially women. Native American women are more likely to go missing or become victims of violence, nationwide, than any other demographic of people — yet their stories are less likely to be told, or to even make it to media headlines. During a month that is ordinarily for celebration and expressing joy for our ancestry, we must take this day to remember the ongoing struggle our indigenous relations face when it comes to being represented, protected and heard.
If you support indigenous Americans, and you want to see justice for the countless Native Americans who fall victim to violence or unsolved disappearance, please consider wearing red today — and until November 25th, which is National Native American Heritage Day. Read more about Red Shawl Day here.
