Kanye West has reportedly been banned from the Grammy Awards due to his recent troubling behavior stemming from his very public divorce from Kim, among other things. While there are certainly people celebrating this bit of news, is the decision fair?
NPR is just one of countless outlets covering the news that Kanye — who’s name has been changed to Ye — is not allowed to perform at this year’s Grammy Awards show. A cursory search on the matter couldn’t determine whether or not any other artist has been banned by the iconic awards show coordinators, but plenty of problematic artists have been allowed to perform.
For example, Chris Brown has never been barred from the Grammys, even though he absolutely brutalized Rihanna several years ago. There have been no reports of Kanye physically assaulting women or any controversy that could be considered similar. Also singer John Mayer has never been barred from any of these awards shows — and he was caught saying the N word. Certainly there are more examples, but you get the point.
Kanye has won a couple dozen Grammys over the course of his career, and has been nominated for probably double the amount he’s actually won. It seems a little over-the-top to ban him. Nonetheless, his behavior has indeed been troubling. Do you think he should be given another chance to perform, or was the decision to ban Ye the appropriate choice?
