Do you remember Sherri Papini? She gained notoriety in 2o16 when she was reported missing under the belief that she had fallen victim to foul play. Of course, it was soon discovered that the missing woman had fabricated her kidnapping, and was never in any danger at all. Now it’s being reported that the notorious liar is finally getting a taste of karma.
Crime Online reports that Sherri Papini has been charged with lying to federal agents as well as defrauding the California Victim’s Compensation Board. The California woman was arrested approximately six years following the notorious spectacle. If the timing seems odd to you, you’re not alone. Apparently authorities needed half a decade to fully build a case against Papini — and it looks like they’re going to make an example out of her.
Sherri Papini appeared in court shortly after her recent arrest — and instead of expressing any remorse for what happened in 2016, she used her time before the judge to complain. She complained about the food she was being given in jail, and claimed that she had allergies and dietary restrictions that were being neglected. Mind you, she had only been in jail for a day leading up to this court appearance. It’s true that if this woman has dietary restrictions that the jail needs to make sure her nutritional needs are met. However, the fact that Papini chose her court appearance to complain about food as opposed to seeming contrite about the 2016 incident is rather telling. Her attitude remains one of privilege and self-importance — just as it was in 2016, when she fabricated a stereotypically racist story of being kidnapped by people of color.
In 2016 Sherri Papini vanished for much of the month of November before turning up over 100 miles away from her home on Thanksgiving day. She told police that she’d been kidnapped by two hispanic women who were playing “Mariachi music” in their vehicle. After a brief investigation it was revealed that Papini was in fact staying with a former boyfriend the entire time that she was missing. The story of Hispanic women and the Mariachi music was entirely fabricated.
Sherri Papini deserves to be held accountable for multiple reasons
When Sherri Papini lied about two Hispanic women kidnapping her at gunpoint, she committed an atrocious act that has been commonplace among certain white people for generations. Even though these Hispanic kidnappers were completely imaginary, Papini’s intent was to pass off responsibility for her actions onto people of color in a stereotypical and very racist way. When white women falsely accuse people of color of any crime, they are at risk of being falsely imprisoned and even murdered by police officers. Papini exercised malicious white privilege and put the Hispanic community under dire risk, simply to avoid admitting that she’d been shacking up with another man for three weeks.
Not only did she put people of color in danger with her lies, she took away valuable public services that could have been used to protect citizens and investigate actual crimes. The time and manpower used by authorities to search for Sherri Papini, over the course of an entire month in 2016, was taken from each and every single person in the area who had fallen victim to actual kidnappings, assaults and worse.
She created a public panic and wasted a lot of peoples’ time during the course of her disappearance. The moment it was reported that a young mother had gone missing, people began to search for her and spread awareness of her case. People in her community, neighboring communities and even other states offered any help that they could out of the kindness of their hearts.
She collected money intended for crime victims following the revelation that she’d made up the story of kidnapping. Federal agents say that Papini collected at least 35 checks totaling over $30,000 while continuing to lie to detectives. In other words, this woman allegedly committed intentional fraud on the state of California, purposely and willfully taking money out of the hands of people who actually needed it.
She could go to prison for a very long time
If found guilty, Sherri Papini could face over 26 years in federal prison — and given the allegations against her, that doesn’t seem unreasonable at all. Her family, on the other hand, disagrees — and they’re speaking out against her arrest, calling it an “ambush.” Of course, none of these loved ones have commented about the $30k that was unfairly taken from California crime victims.
