A Nevada woman has been convicted in a case of hiring a hitman to kill her husband. However, this is no run-of-the-mill case of murder for hire. Instead of paying the contract killer with cold, hard cash, the convicted woman opted to put her murderous deeds on the Bitcoin blockchain.
Oxygen shares that the hilarious failure of a crime took place in 2016 when Fallon, Nevada woman Kristy Felkins went on the “dark web” to access a website dedicated to hiring hitmen, as well as other illegal services. The administrator of the website — which is no longer in operation — talked with the Nevada woman several times over the web as she gave them personal details about her husband, such as locations where he would be vulnerable. She completed the transaction to show how serious she was, and paid the administrator of the site 12 Bitcoin to kill her husband. In 2016, BTC wasn’t anywhere as high-in-value as it is now, and so it was equal to approximately $5k.
The joke was on the Nevada woman though, because the administrator of the hitman site took her money and did nothing. Come to find out, the site she’d been accessing via the dark web was a scam site. While it advertised a litany of illegal services, none of these services were actually provided once customers’ forked over their crypto. And, of course, the site didn’t refund the money back to Felkin.
Police found out about the attempt on the life of the woman’s husband through an anonymous tipster who reported Felkin’s screen name on the site, as well as all the details needed to make an arrest. Of course, it goes without saying that this is a pretty suspicious detail. Who turned this woman in to authorities? It’d have to be someone who knew what she was up to, and what site she was using — and it sounds like the only people who were aware of this activity was Felkin and the “hitman.”
